150-year-old quay is being renovated
In Gothenburg, Skanska is renovating Packhuskajen. The quay stretches from Stora Bommen and eastwards towards Jussi Björling's place at the Göteborg Opera. The place is culturally historically important and part of the fortifications around old Gothenburg.
The quay is 150 years old and needs to be modernized.
Renovation divided into phases
Skanska has been commissioned by the City of Gothenburg to renovate and strengthen Packhuskajen in phases.
The first phase of the project was carried out between December 2019 and September 2021. During this phase, 140 meters of the quay were renovated. The old structure was demolished and replaced by a significantly more stable concrete quay, founded on steel piles drilled into the rock.
The quay is now higher, two meters above the water level, and has been fitted with a riverside protection. The last part of phase one was carefully replacing the large street stones from the 19th century. The street stones are of cultural historic value.
Phase two was started in 2022
In February 2022, phase two was started. We picked up where the first phase left off and are renovating the quay all the way to the floating ship museum Maritiman. The work is planned to be completed in February 2024.
In stage two, there is a major focus on replacing old wooden piles in the foundation with new modern steel piles. The goal of the renovation is to create a stable and robust quay that will last for a long time.
Good logistical planning
The logistics are a real challenge. The project is centrally located and the existing quay that we are renovating is not adapted to heavy vehicles. Careful planning is required for how to get vehicles and machines to the workplace. In addition, the project is conducted in connection with ongoing operations.
Reduced climate impact by 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide
Sustainability is a major focus in this project. In phase one, we reduced the project's climate impact by close to 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide by, among other things, replacing the planned granite stone that would cover the quay wall with a matrix-cast concrete surface. We also used 1,200 cubic meters of river water instead of drinking water for flushing when the piles were installed.
In phase two, we have challenged ourselves further. By replacing the concrete with Skanska's green concrete, we hope to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50 percent for one half of the construction and 30 percent for the other half.
Close collaboration with the client
Throughout the project, we have a close collaboration with the client. The client is present at the workplace; this means that we can discuss questions as soon as they arise and find solutions quickly.
Phase three is being planned
Phase three includes the remaining quay construction, from the Maritiman up to the quayside at the Göteborg Opera. This phase is still being planned.
